[Extract] In this volume, the author introduces readers to the wide and fascinating world of venomous creatures— and some of the individuals who have devoted their lives to understanding these marvelous animals and the diverse lethal chemical arsenal they harbor. The book is aimed at a very general audience, and Wilcox has done a highly commendable job of condensing the scientific information and making it accessible to a wide audience. Some of the information, despite being carefully simplified, may still be challenging to navigate for readers without sufficient background, but this is rare. The volume is structured into themed chapters that, in general, involve an interspersed mix of the author's personal anecdotes, stories, case studies, and educational explanatory background. The book concludes with extensive notes, however, this format does not allow for quick and easy identification of citations
